OPEN LETTER

An Open Letter Urging a Moratorium on Advanced AI Development

from futureoflife

The breakthrough of AI has raised concerns.

AI systems with human-competitive intelligence present significant risks to society and humanity. Despite the Asilomar AI Principles urging careful planning and management, AI labs continue to race towards developing increasingly powerful AI systems that are difficult to understand or control. Decisions about AI development should not be left to unelected tech leaders, and development should only proceed when the positive effects and manageable risks of AI systems are confidently established.

Futureoflife released an Open Letter calls for a 6-month pause on the training of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4, urging AI labs and independent experts to use this time to establish shared safety protocols for AI design and development. It also encourages refocusing AI research on improving existing systems’ safety, interpretability, transparency, and trustworthiness.

Additionally, AI developers should work with policymakers to accelerate robust AI governance systems, including regulatory authorities, oversight and tracking mechanisms, provenance and watermarking systems, auditing and certification, liability for AI-caused harm, public funding for AI safety research, and institutions to address AI-induced economic and political disruptions.

By doing so, humanity can enjoy a flourishing future with AI, reaping the rewards and allowing society to adapt in a responsible manner.
